![]() ![]() Arthur served several charitable organizations as an officer and director, including L’Arche Daybreak during its formative years, and such national professional bodies as the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation, and the Canadian Maritime Law Association, and was a titular member of the Comité Maritime International of Brussels. Upon his appointment to the court, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario bestowed the honorary designation of Counsel Emeritus in recognition for his many years as its general counsel. He took particular pleasure mentoring aspiring law students, law clerks, and junior lawyers. In July 1983 he was named to the Federal Court of Appeal, where he served until his retirement in 2004. Arthur practiced law in Toronto, ON, with Wright and McTaggart and successor firms until 1983, and was for five years a lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto. He was called to the bar of Nova Scotia in 1956 and of Ontario in 1958, and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1971. One of 13 children, he is survived by sisters Cecilia Whitty and Lorraine Rouleau. Arthur married his cherished Anna Mae in 1956, and was proud father to daughters Carolyn (Frank Giovannetti), Donna (William Almon), Bonnie (Randy MacLeod), Mary (Darin Barney), and Catherine (Kelly Harrison), sons Ronald (Louise Lapointe), John (Laura Varela), and James grandfather to Michael, Matthew, Clare, Katharine, Megan, John, Ross, Jane, Eva, William, Nora, Emma, Morgan and Livia great-grandfather to Ella, Breya, Eli, Miles and Gordie. ![]() He graduated from Harvard Law School with a Master of Laws degree in 1956, his dissertation supervised by Professor Archibald Cox. He served as an assistant librarian while studying law at Dalhousie University prior to graduating in 1955. Francis Xavier University from which he graduated in 1952. Peter’s High School under renowned principal Helen Archibald and at St. Peter’s, son of George and Charlotte Stone, educated in a one-room elementary school, St. Arthur Stone passed away peacefully in Ottawa, ON, predeceased by Anna Mae (Pettipas) his beloved wife of nearly 63 years. ![]()
